Human remains found earlier this year have been identifi ed as those of Dakota Scott Covington, who had been missing from the Mead area since April 29, 2021, the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the sheriff’s office, the remains were discovered in February in the southwestern portion of Bryan County.
The sheriff’s office, then under Sheriff Johnny Christian, went to the scene to investigate “During their search, they located clothing items consistent with what a missing person from Bryan County had been reported to be wearing,” the sheriff’s office said, in a social media post. “The area was immediately secured, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) was requested to assist with the recovery and investigation.”
On Feb. 22, OSBI’s forensic team located human remains at the scene, which were subsequently sent to the OSBI lab for identification.
On July 10, Sheriff Joey Tucker received confirmation from OSBI that the remains have been positively identified as those of Covington.
According to the sheriff’s office, the exact cause of death remains under investigation and law enforcement is continuing to follow up on leads and gather information related to the case.

In other news, a man riding a motorized bicycle was killed Sunday after being struck by a car, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
According to OHP, 62-yearold Kerry W. Welborn of Durant was riding the bicycle westbound at about 12:05 a.m. on Highway 70 approximately two miles west of Durant when he was struck by a westbound Cadillac Escalade driven by 32-year-old Sarah Dickens of Mead.
Welborn was pronounced dead at the scene and Dickens was not injured, OHP said. The cause of the collision was still under investigation at the time of the OHP report. Trooper Trent Mixon investigated.
In another accident, a Caddo woman was killed July 8 while walking when she was hit by a pickup, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
Seventy-year-old Haskellene Westbrook was dead at the scene of the 7:34 p.m. accident on Voca Road about four miles west of Caney. According to OHP, Westbrook was walking westbound when she was struck by a Ford F250 driven by 62-year-old Michael W. Ables of Coleman.
