Boys & Girls Club Color Run takes off

The Boys & Girls Club of Durant had its annual 5K For Futures & Color Fun Run Saturday morning and the event concluded with colored powder thrown in the air.

Kam Sallee, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Red River Valley, said the event was to raise funds for the Great Futures for the children program.

“The goal of this is really to get the community out and about, see our club, our grounds and then really just get some exercise,” Sallee said. “It is fundraiser for our Durant unit, so all funds will go directly towards the kids here and we’re really working on increasing our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education) program, so we can start filling up our mobile club house that is actually coming in a few months.”

Sallee said the STEM program will be housed inside a camper.

“It’s a pretty exciting thing that’s going on here,” he said. “It will be pulled by our truck there and the goal of that is to reach the communities that we don’t currently serve. We’re starting to raise some funds now to help build up that, extra computers, laptops, thing that are more mobile, so then we can take that out into these other communities.”

The Durant Boys & Girls Club serves about 160-170 youth per day and Sallee said he thought this was the fifth year for the Color Run.

“We’re really excited to have it and it’s an easy event for anyone to come and join,” Sallee said.

The club said a little more than $9,000 was raised during the event.
