The Choctaw Nation Summer Food Service Program will continue its beneficial program of meal distribution to children across southeastern Oklahoma this summer.
“We are pleased to offer multiple opportunities for children to get a nutritious meal this summer,” says Shelly Rector, senior director of USDA food and nutrition programs for Choctaw Nation. “Through grants with the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) we are able to supply the meals to anyone, regardless of nationality and with no discrimination.”
The meals are now available and will continue through the summer until the start of the school year. Check with your site for specific day of the week for distribution, as it varies by location.
“I am so thankful for the program. It keeps my kids fed,” said Donna Simmons, a single mother of four children. “It’s easy to participate. I can even help feed their friends who are over playing. It just helps everyone.”
Free meals which meet federal nutrition guidelines are provided to all children ages 18 years and under at approved Summer Food Service Program sites in areas with significant concentration of low-income children. The parents will be able to grab meals and go during the hours specified online.
Sites are located throughout Atoka, Bryan, Choctaw, Haskell, Hughes, Latimer, Le Flore, McCurtain, Pittsburg, and Pushmataha counties. Go to www.choctawnation.com/ services/summer-food-service for more information.
