The Durant Church of Christ held a groundbreaking for a new church auditorium on Jan. 7 Minister Layne Heitz said it has been in the congregation’s plans for the last three years.

“Our first building in this location was designed to be an activities center,” Heitz said. “It’s been terrific for us but was not designed specifically for church services. We’ve had acoustical problems because the room is so live due to the large concrete floor and metal roof.

“The new building is being built by Jay Mauck, who is a deacon in the church. Jay also built the activities center. The new building will house an auditorium which will greatly enhance the acoustics which will be a real plus for our sermons and singing. It will essentially double our space as well. We could not be more excited.”

The Durant Church of Christ was founded in 1918 and is one of Durant’s oldest churches.

It operates with three ministers. Layne Heitz is the is the pulpit minister and has been involved with the church since he and his wife April moved to Durant in 1996. He was also a math professor at SOSU before becoming the full-time minister. Logan Cates is the family minister and has been with the church for eight years.

Jered Hyatt is the college minister and heads up the Student Bible Center adjacent to SOSU. He’s been with the church for 12 years. The Church Elders are Billy Albright, Mickey Davis, Layne Heitz, Paul Mauck, Ron Taylor, Martin Tucker and Charles Villines.

Church services are Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Wednesday at 7 p.m. The address is 5312 N. 1st Avenue, Durant. Anyone is welcome to attend.
