City brings back Yard of the Month

The City of Durant Keep Durant Beautiful committee has started awarding a Yard of the Month again, something that has not been done for a long time.

Last week, the Steve and Elizabeth Renee Brittingham home at 904 W. Elm St., received the honor. This home, that had once been converted into a boarding house and also was vacant for a time, was refurbished in the 1990s by the late Robert and Shirley Webb. It fell into neglect again until being renovated by the Brittinghams.

Mrs. Brittingham said it was a blessing to receive the award.

“I have fond memories of this in my youth here in Durant,” she said. “I also have to say that I feel honored that the first one the committee picked was in a historical area of Durant. I’m am honored beyond words.”

Keep Durant Beautiful chairman and city council member Humphrey Miller is pleased to bring back the Yard of the Month.

“The Yard of the Month initiative is a great idea that fosters friendly competition among citizens to beautify their yards and recognize those who go above and beyond in lawn care and landscaping,” Miller said. “Steve and Renee are well-deserving of being the first recipients, having maintained their yard beautifully for years.”

Keep Durant Beautiful committee members are, Chairman Miller, Candy Horsley, Lenzie Knight, Sara Solis and Bill Sudderth.

Thecommitteealsoapproved recommendations to City Manager Pam Polk and the city council on mural painting from the City of Durant Parks & Recreation Department, Dumpster decorating contest, collaboration with Durant Main Street regarding Streetscape and creating a Keep Durant Beautiful Facebook page.
