City council approves street improvement project

Durant City Council in a recent meeting approved a street improvement project to mill and overlay 4.76 miles on multiple streets in the city.

Council members awarded a bid and approved a contract in the amount of $1,484,348.76 to Drave Paving. The streets to be improved are: Bryan Drive, Lorrie Lane, Forrest Circle, Robin Hood Drive, McLean Road, Mason Street, Smith Street, N.E. 16th Avenue, two sections of South First Avenue, Georgia Street, Mississippi Street, South 16th Avenue, Louisiana Street, Lynnwood Drive, Parkview Drive and Harmony Drive.

Depending upon the weather, the project is expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of that month.

The council also approved a U.S. Department of Transportation 2025 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant application for funding to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and a commitment for the required 20 percent project match.

According to a memo by assistant grants coordinator Tiffany Steele, the grant program has planning and implementation grants and an approved Comprehensive Safety Action is required before funds can be requested in future grant cycles.

“If awarded, the City would conduct a procurement process to contract with a professional engineer consultant to work with staff and conduct community engagement to develop the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan,” the memo states.

The purpose of the plan is “to identify existing roadway and safety deficiencies in the community to prevent death and serious injury on roads and streets involving all roadway users.”
