Bryan County Commissioners Scott Goad, Tony Simmons and Brandon Carr in a Monday meeting approved the wording of two sales tax propositions that will provide additional funding to all three county districts and the sheriff’s office.
One proposition is for threequarters of a cent with each district in the county receiving one-quarter cent to be used for road and bridge construction, repair and maintenance and the purchase of equipment related to these things. At the suggestion of Commissioner Carr, payroll has been added to the proposition.
The other one is a onequarter cent tax for the sheriff’s office to be used for payroll support, training, acquisition of equipment, vehicles, facilities and the construction, repair, renovation and maintenance of public safety facilities operated by the sheriff’s office.
The county currently has a half-cent sales tax and commissioners said during a prior meeting that other counties in southeastern Oklahoma have two-cent taxes.
The taxes, if approved by voters during the Nov. 5 election, will be permanent.
