Construction ongoing on new office for district attorney

Construction is moving forward with the new office for the District Attorney’s Offi ce at 301 N. Fourth Ave. and Bryan County District 3 Commissioner Brandon Carr said workers are a little ahead of schedule.

According to Carr, the contractor said they are saving the county money on some of the things they are doing. Total estimated cost of the building is $2.4 million. Carr said OG&E is not charging to relocate the power.

Commissioners are hoping the District Attorney’s Office can move in by the first of the year.

The D.A. is currently in the former Plaza movie theater on North Third Avenue that is in poor condition which is why the county is having a new building constructed.

“It’s a safety hazard right now and that’s why we’re trying to get out of it and get the D.A. in this new building and there’s been people interested in the building and we’re just kind of moving forward,” Carr said.

In 2024, county commissioners voted to donate The Plaza to Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

It was opened in 1936 by T. Miller Davidge. It’s final showing was “Rocky V” on Jan. 6, 1991. The building was once owned by businessman Allen Wheeler until being donated to the county.

Then-Southeastern President Thomas Newsom said in 2024 that the university had plans to use it for downtown events although there have been no discussions since Newsom’s departure.
