Couple living in assisted-living facility celebrates 68 years of marriage

HelenandWaymonThompson celebrated 68 years of marriage and they were presented an anniversary cake on June 2 at Featherstone Assisted Living Center.

Their birthdays are on the same day, Sept. 24, and they are a year apart with Mr. Thompson born in 1936 and Mrs. Thompson in 1937.

They were married on June 2, 1956, in Ada and have been residents of Featherstone for about a year and a half.

When asked what it feels like being married 68 years, Mr. Thompson joked, ‘Oh, I’ve give plumb out.”

Mrs. Thompson said, “Well, it hasn’t been bad,” and Mr. Thompson, replied, “Grin and bear it.”

“Yeah, just go on with it,” Mrs. Thompson said.

As to any secrets of being married 68 years, the Thompsons both said, “Don’t fuss.” “You’ve heard that old saying, haven’t you,” Mr. Thompson asked. “She deserves, ‘yes dear.’ That’s what I say to her, ‘yes dear.’” The Thompsons agreed it doesn’t seem like 68 years have gone by.

“It really doesn’t,” Mrs. Thompson said. “It really doesn’t seem that long. We are happy to be celebrating.”

The couple is happy to be at Featherstone.

“We found a good place to stay while we’re here,” Mrs. Thompson said. “They’re taking care of us.”

Mr. Thompson said, “They feeding us good.”

The couple’s dog also resides with them.

”Duke is the dog’s name and he runs the show,” Mr. Thompson said.

The couple has two children, Darrell Thompson and Barbara Rhynes.
