Trump’s illegal and immoral war with Iran must stop.
The current Congress won’t stop it, of course. While some members of Congress do have the wisdom and courage to do so, many of the Republican members (and perhaps a few Democratic ones) are still too fearful of Donald Trump.
But I hope the predictions of massive Republican losses in the midterm elections will come true and that the new Democratic-controlled Congress will hold this demented President in check. That would include voting to cut off funding for his foolish war with Iran.
I called him demented. He has always been a narcissist, and a battery of psychologists has declared that narcissism— at least to the extent Donald Trump exhibits it—is a form of mental illness.
But more and more, he now shows signs of increasing dementia as well.
That word, dementia, according to the Fourth Edition of Webster’s New World College Dictionary, means “a disorder of the mind affecting perception, memory, and judgment, characterized by reduced ability to remember, control muscular movements, recognize familiar objects and sounds, etc.” Dementia is often age-related. Watching and listening to this 80-year-old man (his wildly inappropriate comments about people and events, his confusion of reality with what he wishes were true, and his apparent disregard for whether his actions violate the law or not), can we doubt that he’s sinking further into dementia each day?
We can’t stop his progression into this mental disorder, but we can control our response to his crazy actions. Take the Iran war, for example. As he casts about for believable reasons to explain why he began and continues it, he seems to have largely settled on this one: We must prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
That indicates either total ignorance of what was in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) that had been negotiated by former Secretary of State John Kerry under President Barack Obama’s leadership (and which Trump tore up in 2018), or else a total disregard for what that document had provided.
The JCPOA is a fairly long document, but the opening words state: “Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop or acquire any nuclear weapons.”
In other words, we already had a guarantee of a nuclearweapons- free Iran, before Trump stupidly tore up that agreement.
And we didn’t have to just take Iran’s word for whether it had such weapons or not. According to the JCPOA, we could send nuclear inspectors into that country at any time, without giving prior warning.
So why did Trump get rid of a deal that already provided us with the outcome he says he wants?
Apparently because the JCPOA was Obama’s success, and Trump seems to be eatenupwithenvyof Obama. Other evidence of that envy is that Trump openly campaigns to get a Nobel Peace Prize—which, having started this foolish war with Iran, he’s not likely to ever win— again apparently because Obama was awarded one.
This is not a sane man leading this country. And his disastrous war is not only killing our fellow citizens who are tasked with fighting it, but it is bankrupting the nation.
We must end it, as soon as possible. This excursion is as demented as Trump himself.
