The Durant Lions Club Draggin’ Main Car & Bike Show was Saturday in downtown Durant with more than 200 automobiles and motorcycles on display.
It is the only major fundraiser for the Lions and is the biggest event that happens on Main Street, according to Lynn Smith, Lions Club president “I’m the instigator of this car show,” Smith said. “I started it nine years ago.”
Smith said there were 30 different categories for automobiles and four categories for motorcycles. More than 60 trophies sponsored by Wright’s Drive In were awarded that afternoon.
Other events included a “Kidz Kruize” with power wheels and pedal cars. The burnout contest is a crowd favorite.
According to Smith, Choctaw Casino & Resort is the No. 1 sponsor of the event and they provide a large amount of money and do a lot of work for the show and they also printed flyers.
Funds raised will go toward the club’s many charitable projects.
“The Lions Club has so many different things,” Smith said. “We have the Toys for Tots. We do the backpack coalition. We just do so many different things throughout the town.
“People that can’t afford eyeglasses, we try to provide it for them. We have a camera that’s a special camera. It was over $10,000 that checks kids’ eyes and see if they need glasses or not. We can’t prescribe glasses, but we can check it and see if they need glasses.”
