Birds are beautiful, important, and at risk locally and globally. They should not be taken for granted. Local residents will learn tips for making Durant more birdfriendly and why it’s important at a free, public program Tuesday, Feb. 11, hosted by the Durant Sustainability Coalition and the Texoma Audubon Society.
Local bird expert and university Professor Doug Wood will present the program, “Let’s Create a Bird Friendly Durant,” at 5:30 - 7 p.m. Feb. 11 in Room 100 of the Russell Building on the Southeastern campus. Free parking is available behind the Russell Building, off Montgomery Drive. Map directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y6SpaPGNxDQV1wYz5 Refreshments will be provided, and people of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.
“Birds are not only beautiful and entertaining to watch, they play an essential role in the region’s ecosystem, serving as pollinators, seed dispersers and natural pest controllers,” notes Professor Wood.
You’ll learn why birds are at risk and how local citizens can make Durant better for birds, including ideas for backyard landscaping, bird feeding, protecting green spaces, and addressing problems with feral or unrestrained cats and dogs.
