Durant School District bond proposition passes

Voters approved a $4 million bond proposition for the Durant School District during an election Sept. 9.

According to the Oklahoma Election Board, the proposition passed by 68.51 percent with 322 votes in favor of it and 148 opposed. The total of registered voters who voted in the election is 470. School bond propositions require a 60 percent super majority.

According to the school district, the bonds will be used for constructing, equipping, repairing and remodeling school buildings, acquiring furniture, fixtures and equipment plus acquiring and improving school sites. School officials said the proposition was not projected to cause an increase in property taxes because it maintains the millage the district currently has.

The bonds will fund the following: - To acquire and/or install technology equipment, instructional software and textbooks districtwide from the proceeds of bonds maturing within five years from their date $1,975,000.00.

- To repair and/or replace roofs and HVAC equipment districtwide, as needed $1,700,000.00.

- To acquire band/orchestra equipment district-wide, as needed $300,000.00.

- To acquire choir/fine arts equipment district-wide, as needed $25,000.00.

In a social media post after the proposition passed, the school district said it was a great day to be a Lion.

“Thank you for your support,” the district said.
