Elderly woman killed in wrong-way crash

An elderly woman died after a head-on crash after driving the wrong way on Highway 69/75, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Eighty-four-year-old Saba Braswell of Terrell, Texas, was taken by Bryan County EMS to Texoma Medical Center after the 2:38 a.m. crash Feb. 11 in the Colbert city limits. She was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to OHP, Braswell was driving a 2014 Ford northbound in the southbound lane of Highway 69/75 when her vehicle collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Ford driven by 21-year-old Alexis Tello of Denison, Texas.

Tello was taken by Colbert EMS to TMC where he was treated and released for leg injuries. Two passengers in Tello’s vehicle, Jesus Tello, 21, and Oscar Bautista, 21, also were treated and released at TMC.

Braswell was not wearing a seat belt and all occupants of the other vehicle were wearing them, according to Trooper Josh Harrington’s report. Braswell was pinned in the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes until being freed by Colbert firefighters.

Bryan County EMS, Colbert EMS, Colbert Fire Department, Calera Police Department and Choctaw Tribal Police assisted at the scene.

In other recent emergency calls, Durant firefighters responded to a house fire at 723 N. 19th Ave. and when they arrived,, smoke was emitting from the eaves and the back of the house. There was a large fire on the back porch that extended inside the house and firefighters extinguished the flames. No one was inside the home when firefighters arrived, however, a police officer kicked in the door to save a dog, according to a DFD report.

Renters were told not to enter the home until the fire marshal investigated the damage. Quality Real Estate was notified that one of their rent homes had been on fire and the cause was under investigation at the time of the report. The fire caused approximately $25,000 to to property and contents valued at $200,000.

Durant firefighters also assisted the Silo Volunteer Fire Department with a metal building that caught fire at 122 W. Bourne St. When Durant firefighters arrived, Silo firefi ghters were on scene and the fire was extinguished in a few minutes.
