Voters shot down a onecent sales tax proposition for Bryan County EMS in a special election March 4.
According to election results released by the Oklahoma Election Board, the proposition was defeated 77.89 percent with 1,916 voters opposed.
There were 544 votes for it, 22.11 percent. A total of 2,460 residents voted in the election.
According to the Bryan County Election Board, there are 28,415 registered voters in the county as of March 1.
Bryan County EMS Director Brian Norton said the tax would have allowed EMS to build substations, obtain more ambulances, hire more medics and improve response times to emergencies.
In August 2022, voters approved $5,560,000 bond to build a new facility that will give EMS the space they need plus provide for future growth.
That building is near completion and EMS will be moving into it soon.
