Gardening with kids

Kids are so fascinated by how things grow. First planting with something that looks dead, a seed, and then watching it grow into a plant that changes daily. Kids learn a lot from gardening, said Tommie M. James, Family & Consumer Science and 4-H Extension Educator for Bryan County.

“It teaches a sense of responsibility and accomplishment,” James said. “There is nothing better than eating fresh produce picked from your own garden. Gardening promotes environmental stewardship and provides opportunities to learn about science, nutrition and health. Gardening also provides an opportunity for a child to spend one on one time with a family member or with the whole family.”

For families and kids who would like to learn more about gardening, you can visit the Bryan County Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service’s “4-H Grows Here” at the upcoming Texoma Spring Garden Show.
