Glen Mulready, commissioner of the Oklahoma Insurance Department, visited Durant March 7 to speak at the Oklahoma Emergency Management Conference, local insurance agents and the fire department.

Mulready said the visit was a part of the office’s outreach program to communities outside of the metropolitan areas. Oklahoma Emergency Management had a conference last week at Choctaw Casino and Resort and Mulready spoke at that event.

Later in the day, he spoke at the Bryan County Fairgrounds.

It’s (insurance) a great business,” Mulready said. “Nothing in our world gets made without insurance.”

After the meeting, Mulready said, “We try to meet with the agents and brokers in the community. We call it Coffee with the Commissioner. We give them an update on us and plus hear from them. Then, we always meet with the fire chief in each community too.”

After meeting with insurance agents and brokers at the fairgrounds, Mulready visited the Durant Fire Department with the No. 1 reason being to thank them for what they do.

“And then No. 2, make sure they know about the services that we can help them to improve a community’s fire protection class,” Mulready said. “We’ve got a consultant on staff who does exactly that, travels around the state and helps coach up fire departments to improve their fire protection class.

“I like to say that the fire department and police, when incidents happen, they’re the first responders. We are second responders. The insurance department really is.”

Mulready has been a licensed in- surance agent since October 1983.

“We had a great turnout for Durant folks and it’s always just good to hear from folks and for them to come out in the middle of the day and hear from us and give us any feedback that is always helpful,” he said.
