The Durant Lady Lions posted a pair of shutout victories and Lions split games in soccer action last week at Paul Laird Field.

Coach Katie Williams’ Lady Lions cruised past Madill, 8-0, and then notched a tight 1-0 triumph over McAlester in the District 5A-1 opener.

On the boys’ side, Durant also recorded a shutout with a 2-0 decision over Madill but came up on the short end of a 5-2 defeat to McAlester.

Both teams will return home to face district newcomer Choctaw on Friday night.

Girls

Alex Martinez was exceptional in goal throughout both contests, turning back every opposing opportunity.

Against Madill, it was a DHS offensive onslaught as they peppered the Wildcat goal time and time again with shots while scoring eight times.

Karah Boydstun fueled that scoring punch with four goals on six shots and also contributed an assist.

J.J. Patten added five shots on goal, scoring once while Katelyn Mauck, Aubrey Tomlinson and Kamryn White also tallied one goal apiece. Mauck chipped in an assist.

The Lady Lions also picked up assists from Katelyn Ortiz, Hailey Ogilby, Addison Polk and Aubree Wise with Ortiz notching four shots on goal and Ogilby adding two shots.

Wind played a major factor in the McAlester contest as Tomlinson punched in the only goal of the game early in the contest on a monster free kick from 35 yards out.

Durant had other chances but couldn’t not crack the net as Boydstun finished with three shots on goal with White and Mauck tossing in two apiece.

Going against the stiff wind after intermission, the Lady Lions went on the defensive with stellar play on the back end.

McAlester was awarded a penalty kick with just 40 seconds remaining in the game but Martinez dove to her right to knock down the potential tying shot and preserve the Durant victory. She finished the contest with 13 saves.

Boys

Facing Madill, it was a tight defensive battle throughout a scoreless first half before anyone ever got on the scoreboard.

Jaylon Saxon notched a pair of second half goals with assists coming from Isaiah Quiros on the first and Joseph Flores on the second.

Hunter Wingfield provided another solid performance in goal, turning back the Wildcats. Jack Burrage and the rest of the defensive backline line were keys to the victory, according to head coach John Wilmoth.

The Lions led McAlester 1-0 at halftime but couldn’t get much offense sustained against a stiff wind after intermission.

Flores notched a goal on a header off a throw-in from Saxon and the Lions also picked up a goal on a Braylen Lyday penalty kick that found the back of the net.

Wilmoth credited Wingfield with another quality outing, despite allowing the second half goals, as he posted 13 saves and also stopped several penalty kicks in the final 20 minutes to keep Durant within striking distance.
