Legislature reaches agreement on budget

After weeks of negotiations and eight budget summits, I am happy to report that the House and Senate finally came to an agreement on how to allocate the approximately $13 billion available for fiscal year 2025. Even though we agreed to a budget, we still have work to do.

This year’s $12.47 billion budget, a decrease from last year’s $12.86 billion, maintains flat funding for many state agencies as requested by the governor in his State of the State address while addressing the concerns of Oklahomans statewide.

Next week, the legislation containing the appropriations language will be heard in both chambers. The bills will be introduced in JCAB and then on the chamber floor where they originate. This process allows members to ask questions and debate the bills. It takes at least five days to pass a bill through the legislative process, so we’re on track to finish our work next week.

In other news, following the recent severe weather and tornadoes, the Governor took decisive action last week by signing legislation to aid communities impacted by the tornadoes. House Bill 2913 allocates $15 million to bolster the State Emergency Fund, while House Bill 2912 earmarks $30 million to establish the State Assistance Dedicated for Disaster- impacted Local

Economies Revolving Fund.

I am thankful we are able to expedite this legislation to help with a swift recovery and reconstruction effort across affected communities in Oklahoma. It is crucial that we support our fellow citizens during these challenging times, ensuring that resources are available for immediate relief and longterm rebuilding.

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! It’s important to take a moment from our busy lives to honor those who have served in the military and remember their sacrifices. I hope you all started off summer safely and had some fun!
