Man killed in officer involved shooting

A man was shot and killed by police near the Rock Creek Schools baseball field in Bokchito on Monday when officers tried to arrest him on an outstanding warrant, authorities said.

According to the Bokchito Police Department, officers were attempting to arrest a person at about 6:45 p.m. around Ball Park Road. Police Chief Shane Guhl said that during the incident, police were confronted by a man that resulted in the officer-involved shooting.

Guhl said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and that no police officers or citizens were injured.

“I understand the community’s concern regarding a fatal encounter, Guhl said, in a statement. “My office is committed to transparency. This shooting is under investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, which is standard procedure to ensure an objective review.”

According to Guhl, the department is conducting an administrative investigation and the officer(s) involved are on administrative leave that is standard procedure while the investigation is ongoing, and not a disciplinary action.

“I ask for the community’s patience as investigators gath- er all the facts,” Guhl said. “My thoughts are with everyone involved with this tragic event.”

Rock Creek Schools Superintendent Rob Frederick posted a message on social media that evening to alert the community that there was an active shooter situation near the high school baseball field.

“Law enforcement quickly handled the situation, and there is no longer a threat,” Frederick said. “All of our students, parents and visitors are safe. We are very thankful to the Bokchito Police, the Bryan County Sheriff’s Department, the Lighthorse Police, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for an amazing job protecting everyone today.”

The name of the man was not released at press time Tuesday.
