Police officers greet early childhood students

The Durant Police Department and the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office greeted Robert E. Lee Early Childhood students as they arrived at school on the morning of Oct. 8.

REL Principal Lisa Whitley said Deputy Scott Brown, who is the school resource officer at REL, wanted to do this.

“He wanted to host a welcome where the law enforcement from Durant would come and open doors for our students at arrival so they can become a little more familiar with law enforcement and know that they are community helpers and their job is to help boys and girls and moms and dads and our hope was that this would promote some community awareness of that,” Whitley said.

The greeting was on the heels of The Durant Police Department and Durant Fire Department’s second annual National Night Out on Oct. 6.

“He thought that would be a great outreach,” Whitley said.

Whitley agreed it was an opportunity for the children to get to know the police officers.

“Absolutely, in a way that would let them know, you know, part of what we do here at Robert E. Lee is learn about community helpers and what better way to learn about them than up close and personal and for them to be here and to see how the officers help us,” Whitley said.

The officers also provided doughnut holes that were contributed by a local doughnut shop.
