The opening quarter set the tone in both contests as Rock Creek and Colbert split a Bryan County Conference basketball pair last week in Colbert.
In the opener, Rock Creek raced to a massive lead after one frame and never looked back for a 65-31 triumph. It was a complete reversal in the boys’ action as Colbert burst out of the gate and led 22-8 through the first period on the way to a 57-39 victory.
Girls
Rock Creek scored 19 of the game’s first 21 points spurred by an eight-point scoring flurry from Ella Hamill as she connected on a pair of three pointers.
The Lady Mustangs poured in another 20 points in the second period as Audrey Knight tossed in nine and Carlaysia Brown had seven in that frame alone.
After carrying the 39-11 cushion into the second half, Rock Creek continued to steadily pull away as they were up 56-23 at the end of three quarters.
Three Lady Mustangs tallied double figures with Brown keying the attack with 17 while Hamill chipped in 16, sinking four treys along the way. Knight ended with 11 as Maddie Williams connected for eight, Jeslyn O’Dell scored six, Mahlia Venegas notched five and Kountry St. John added two.
Alivia Love buried three treys for Colbert and led the offensive charge with 10 points. Kennedy Sullenger posted eight, Alexis Stogner had six as Kaylee Andrews scored five and Ava Fowler ended with two points.
Boys
Colbert stalwart Kyle Peebles provided a sign of things to come from the start as he pumped in nine first quarter points to spur the Leopards to a 22-8 advantage. Ryder Ribera had all eight points for the Mustangs.
It was a 32-15 Colbert lead at intermission before Peebles and Rock Creek’s Jarret Barfield went on a scoring duel in the third by matching each other nearly point for point. Peebles tossed in 12 and Barfield had 10 as Rock Creek notched a 17-15 scoring advantage in their biggest quarter of the night.
Peebles poured in a season-high 30 points as the Leopard catalyst with Adrian Clement adding 11, Zade Simes contributing 10 and Alex Stogner six.
Rock Creek had a pair of double digit scorers with Barfield and Ribera posting 15 points apiece. J.W. Edelen chipped in six and Kenneth Ashby rounded things out with three.
