Six-year-old boy killed in utility vehicle wreck

A 6-year-old Cartwright boy died last Saturday in a utility vehicle accident, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

According to OHP, the boy was a passenger in a Coleman UTV drivin by 72-year-old Thaworn Jackson. The UTV was traveling at approximately 3:15 p.m. on a recreational trail on public federal land about four miles north of Cartwright when it stuck an embankment and rolled one-quarter time, landing on its side.

He was pronounced deceased on the scene and Jackson was not injured, according to OHP.

According to Trooper Cody Enloe’s report, seat belts were not in use.

Troopers Brycen Collins and Bobby Davis assisted in the investigation. The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Cartwright Fire Department, Colbert EMS and Bryan County EMS also assisted at the scene.

In other incidents, OHP said 20-year-old Tristian Smith of Durant was killed Nov. 11 after crashing his motorcycle during a pursuit.

The report stated Smith was operating a Kawasaki motorcycle at a high rate of speed while trying to elude a Bryan County Sheriff’s deputy on Kirsey Road two miles northwest of Calera. The motorcycle then entered a private drive and Smith failed to negotiate a curve and drove through a fence. Smith, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown about 35 feet.

Trooper Josh Christian investigated with assistance by Capt. Scott Hampton, Lt. Josh Christian and Trooper James Reinecker. The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Calera Police Department and Bryan County EMS also assisted at the scene.
