Veterans Day parade is Monday

The Veterans Day Parade will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in downtown Durant and the theme is, “Duty, Honor, Country.”

A ceremony will immediately follow at VFW Post No. 3916, 123 S. Second Ave.

The parade marshal is Major Alvin Jack Wallace.

Wallace is a retired United States Air Force major who served temporary duty assignments multiple times in Vietnam as a radio intercept analyst. He was born in Coquille, Oregon, and joined the Army National Guard at age 17. He had six months of heavy weapon training at Fort Ord, California.

Wallace transferred to the Oklahoma National Guard and went active duty in the U.S. Air Force in 1961. He attended radio intercept analyst school at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas and was promoted to Airman Second Class.

He transferred to Security Service Headquarters at Kelly Air Base in Texas and went to school at National Security Agency in Fort Mead, Maryland.

Wallace then transferred to Shemya, Alaska, working as a radio intercept analyst. He was promoted to Airman First Class and transferred to Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas. He had temporary duty assignments to Vietnam, Taiwan and several other locations. He transferred to Okinawa, Japan, and then returned to Kelly Air Force Base.

He received an honorable discharge before earning his degree in accounting and business while serving in the Arkansas Air National Guard as a Tech Sergeant and a Communication Center Specialist.

Wallace then went to commissioning school and served as Commander of Communication Flight and was promoted to major. He received numerous awards and retired in 1989 with 27 years of service. Major Wallace lives in Durant with his wife Carolyn.
