The Wade-Albany Annual Reunion was held last Saturday at the Wade-Albany Senior Citizen Center with almost 80 people attending.
Winnie Fox, secretary-treasurer for the reunion, said last Saturday’s event was the 44th annual reunion.
“This reunion originated years ago, 44 years ago,” Fox said. “First it was the Albany Reunion and anyone that had graduated from Albany High School or lived here were a part of all this and then a few years on down the road, Wade joined us because several of their students had graduated at Albany and they used to have their own and we just came together and started having the reunion together.”
Fox said 79 people signed the guestbook, and there were people more than 90 years old in attendance.
“It’s a very good turnout,” Fox said. “We’re excited.”
Albany High School closed in 1958, and Fox’s brother, Jim Dunegan, was in that class. Fox said she believed Albany Elementary School closed in 1968, and she was not sure when Wade closed.
“Wade Elementary went out just a few years before Albany,” Fox said.
Board member Janet Boston recognized those attending. Scott Allen cooked and catered the brisket with assistance from Steve and Charlene Wiley. Stephanie Gilbert cooked the side dishes and Matt Swearengin took pictures. Boston thanked all board members for organizing the event.
In a social media post, Fox said the number attending was down from last year, but on the bright side, she saw some new people.
“So glad you attended,” Fox said. “The board thanks each and every one of you for attending. I hope everyone enjoyed it. The food was delicious. It takes a village.”
Next year’s reunion will be on July 17.
