Local poet has signing for latest book

Durant Poet Ron Wallace had a book signing recently at Sundrop Books in downtown Durant for his latest poetry book, “Life is a Disappearing Act.” It is published by Motina Books of Van Alstyne, Texas, and is Wallace’s 10th poetry book. He also has published a novel and a second one is in the works.

Emergency dispatchers honored

Durant/Bryan County emergency dispatchers were honored as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week from April 14-20 and Crystal Phillips was named Dispatcher of the Year. The dispatchers serve in the Durant Police Department as part of Durant Communications – Bryan County 911.

Earth Day held on Rainy Saturday

It was a rainy day last Saturday but the Earth Day Festival hosted by the Durant Sustainability Coalition at Carl Albert Park carried on. Choctaw Tribal Council Member for District 9 James Dry spoke about the tribe’s Going Green program and he said that in 2023, more than four million pounds were recycled by the Choctaw Nation.

Choctaw Nation holds Mental Health and Substance Misuse Conference

The Choctaw Nation Health Services Authority (CNHSA) hosted more than 350 mental health, law enforcement, judicial, and nursing professionals at the annual Navigating Mental Health and Substance Misuse Conference March 11 and 12. Chief Gary Batton opened the conference by thanking the attendees for their service and support they provide to our tribal members, then by encouraging them to remember to take care of themselves.
