Alleged porch pirate charged

A Durant woman is charged with stealing packages off porches, authorities said.

Forty-one-year-old Allyson Nicole Byron was arrested by Bryan County Sheriff’s deputies and Durant Police officers for misdemeanor porch piracy on December 14 from cases involving the Durant area as well as the county, the sheriff’s office said.

In 2020, the Porch Piracy Act was signed into law, enforcing stricter penalties against porch pirates with punishments of up to two years in prison or up to a $5,000 fine.

During her initial court appearance by video from the Bryan County Jail on Dec. 15, Byron pleaded not guilty.

A disposition hearing is set Feb. 15 and Byron’s bond is $2,000.

“Tis the season for packages arriving daily to homes all over Bryan County,” the sheriff’s office said, in a social media post.

“Please watch for suspicious activity in your neighborhood. If you see something, say something. Take a picture of the vehicle and tag and notify law enforcement immediately.“
