Sager breaks school record in Sherman Meet

Sophomore Avery Sager broke her own school record on the way to a second-place individual finish in the TCS Cross Country Meet Saturday at Pecan Grove Park in Sherman.

Sager crossed the finish line with a time of 19 minutes, 47.25 seconds over the 5K course to topple the DHS mark that she had set at last year’s Class 5A state meet.

Adding to the Lady Lion finishers was Laynee Emert in 30th clocking in at 23:13.25. Rachel Cordell was just behind her in 31st in 23:27.14 with Brightyn Pilgreen adding a 37th place time of 24:10.19 as Katelyn Mauck ended 41st at 24:27.36. Durant had one JV girls competitor with Lily Determan checking in 66th in 20:22.92 over a two-mile course.

In the varsity boys’ 5K there were 153 total runners and Zach Ervin placed 27th at 17:29.55 to lead the Lion charge with a personal best time.

Elijah Parker tossed in a personal best 46th place mark of 18:39.26 and Christian Ortiz was 47th in 18:41.01. Madison Roper added a time of 20:14.90 in placing 90th. Durant also had a trio of JV boys runners with Jonathan Hitchcock ending 32nd in 21:12.71, Landon Laster was 74th at 23:24.39 and Tristan Dixon contributed a mark of 29:46.07 for 128th.

Durant’s middle school boys had a sensational meet to claim the team championship in their division over the twomile course.

Cayden Reinecker was the lone Top 10 placer in eighth with a time of 13:02.59, but three other Lions medaled as well. Bohdi Patten posted a mark of 13:32.07 to claim 11th, Cameron Mauck notched a 14th place time of 13:50.35 with Hudson Hamilton one slot back in 15th place in 13:53.43.

Jet Dufur was 22nd at 14:22.44, Dax Tucker notched a mark of 14:57.55 for 32nd and Noah Brumley was 33rd in 14:58.67. Other DMS runners were Tyson Howard, 16:40.77 (60th); Kolson Gordon, 16:54.06 (66th); Kelson Powell, 17:24.50 (74th); Braidon Varner, 17:32.61 (78th); and Jacob Burgess, 21:38.58 (100th).

The Durant middle school girls contributed enough strong totals to take seventh in the team standings.

Tiara Carnes led the charge with a 20th place mark of 16:11.13 with Kyah French just behind her in 24th at 16:40.33 as Grace Morrison checked in 26th in 16:43.31.
