Durant City Council, in a recent meeting, voted to continue supporting the Durant Main Street program.
A resolution approved by the council states, “That the City of Durant supports the participation in the 20242025 Oklahoma Main Street Center with the specific goal of revitalizing the historic central business district using the Main Street 4-Point Approach ™ to economic revitalization.
“That the City of Durant understands that the Main Street Approach is a longterm process that results in a continual effort to maintain and enhance downtown/historic commercial districts.”
City Manager Pam Polk said, “I do recommend continuing support of the Main Street program. I think it’s a really great program to have and it’s state and national, so the city gives $30,000 a year, $7,500 a quarter, to the Main Street program.”
Mayor Martin Tucker asked about the new director of the program and Polk replied that Stephanie Swicker is doing really well.
Swicker took over as director of Durant Main Street on May 28 and is excited about moving the program forward.
“I know we need it very much,” she said, during a recent interview. “We unfortunately lost a lot of our businesses that we’ve had down here. A lot of our boutiques and restaurants and just all the fun places and so we want to fill that back up with people, with businesses again.”
The council also discussed the following agenda items: - Approved Dan Craige to serve an additional threeyear term on the Airport Advisory Board.
- Approved Mike Allen, Wayne Jones and Conner Alford to serve additional three-year terms as Board of Adjustment members.
- Approved Clent Horner and Whitney Kerr to serve additional three-year terms on the Durant Planning Commission.
- Approved Gloria Hodge for an additional three-year term and Phyllis Rustin for a three-year term on the Donald W. Reynolds Center & Library Advisory Board.
