DHS girls cross country claims Madill title

Returning to the Annual Madill Cross Country Meet for the first time since 2018, Durant cruised to the girls team championship while the high school boys claimed fourth in the final standings.

The Lady Lions were paced on the two-mile course by Avery Sager, who continued her early season dominance with a individual title time of 12 minutes, 34.2 seconds.

Medalists for Durant included Laynee Emert with a 13th place mark of 14:18.33, Rachel Cordell at 15th in 14.19.10, Katelyn Mauck took 19th at 14:25.85 and Brightyn Pilgreen checked in 24th clocking in at 14:38.09.

Other Lady Lion finishers were Ella Sorrels in 15:12.29 (29th); Alexi Powell, 15:54.56 (36th); Grace Snow, 18:27.43 (69th); Jaci Austin, 19:11.06 (74th); Lily Determan, 20:33.33 (80th); Ari Hernandez, 21:16.31 (82nd); and Kylee Snow, 21:18.61 (83rd).

Durant’s catalyst on the boys side was again Zach Ervin, who posted a time of 18:26.57 to finish eighth individually. Elijah Parker also medaled in 18th at 19:30.36 over the 5K course.

Madison Roper chipped in a 31st place showing of 21:02.12, Christian Ortiz contributed a 32nd place effort of 21:04.25 with Chris Becerra ending 49th at 21:59.91.

Other Lion finishers were Jonathan Hitchcock, 22:11.28 (51st); Kyric Lehrling, 23:49.54 (62nd); Landon Laster, 25:43.98 (78th); Carson Veenstra, 26:52.95 (82nd); and Tristan Dixon, 29:30.47 (91st).

The Durant Middle School runners posted solid times once again as both the girls and boys teams placed sixth in the ultracompetitive team standings.

Roz Brumley crossed the finish line in 11:34.33 over the 1.5mile course to spur the Lady Lions with a 33rd place individual mark. Katelyn Hitchcock was 35th in 11:38.01, Kyah French notched a 42nd at 11:48.19 with Grace Morrison just behind in 43rd in 11:49.75.

Other Durant girls runners were Ava Anderson, 12:52.58 (67th); Aubri Hixon, 13:48.36 (77th); Selena Osorio, 13:48.36 (78th); and Elizabeth Hitchcock, 15:02.24 (89th).

The Lion middle school boys competitors were topped by Cameron Mauck, who claimed a 19th place individual finish in 13:48.45 on the two-mile course. Landon Emert checked in 25th at 14:03.44, Noah Brumley was 37th in 14:41.86 with Dax Tucker adding a 47th place time of 16:17.58.

Durant’s other runners were Conner Fortenberry, 16:48.31 (64th); Cayden Reinecker, 17:28.49 (70th); Braidon Varner, 17:48.51 (75th); and Jacob Burgess, 88th (20:22.44).

“Madill was a fun, spectatorfriendly course that the kids really liked,” coach Amanda Reynolds commented. “The kids are working extremely hard and we are looking forward to seeing how the season plays out.”

The high school teams will be back on the road for a challenging meet Saturday in Moore.
