The Jeff Wigington head coaching era began in style last week as Caddo blasted its way to a mercy rule 52-6 victory on the road at Thackerville.
In the opening win, the Bruins took command with their rushing game and cruised from there with 339 of their 353 yards coming on the ground.
Junior quarterback Cale Wigington showed off his athleticism as well, carrying 12 times for 229 yards and five scores while also adding a touchdown pass to Noah Dry.
Caddo’s defense forced four turnovers, including setting up the Bruins’ first score with a Dillon Speers recovery of a Boen Proctor forced fumble at the Wildcat 11.
“We came up with an early turnover and scored within a minute and a half,” Coach Wigington stated. “I was really pleased with the transitioning on the field for game one. We didn’t have to waste any timeouts on personnel issues. It was very smooth for the first game and we put a big emphasis on that in practice. The kids just came out and executed. I was very pleased.”
Cale Wigington accounted for all his scores in the opening half as the Bruins built a 46-6 advantage before finishing it off with a Boen Proctor touchdown burst on the first second half possession.
Jake Mullens paced the Caddo defensive charge with 10 tackles with Jake McKay pulling down a pair of interceptions. Speers and Ky Miller each recovered Thackerville fumbles with Miller and Dry combining for the lone sack of the night.
Next on tap for the Bruins is the home opener Friday at 7 p.m. against Depew, which dropped a 48-0 verdict to Waukomis in its first game.
“It doesn’t really matter that much who we are playing at this point,” Coach Wigington said. “Our goal is to make sure we are playing well and at a high level once we get to district play. It’s all about getting ready for the games that matter.
“Our focus is on us because there are a lot of things we need to get better at. We are focused on mistakes and mental errors to get corrected and get better at what we need to do.”
