Woman drowns at Lake Texoma

A Bryan County woman drowned near Duck Island on Lake Texoma, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

According to OHP, 41-year-old Allyson Byron was in the water at about 4:50 p.m. Aug. 30 approximately 20 feet south of the shore.

The reported stated that she was floating on her back and then went under water for an unknown reason and did not resurface. The victim was recovered in about three feet of water and then taken to AllianceHealth in Durant where she was pronounced deceased.

In other news, Durant firefighters put out a house fire at 1203 W. Arkansas St. on Aug. 30 and they were dispatched again later in the day when embers rekindled. According to a DFD report, smoke was emitting from under the carport and siding on the back room. Firefighters pulled back siding and eaves to spray water on the fire, and a hole was also cut in the roof. The cause of the fire was under investigation at the time of the report.

Firefighters were dispatched at 2:33 p.m. Aug. 29 after smoke was observed at Forest Hill Apartments on North Sixth Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered light smoke coming from the second-story balcony and there was a small fire behind metal flashing on the face of the balcony. Firefighters removed metal flashing and put out the fire.

According to a DFD report, the balcony sustained minor damage from the fire and firefighters discovered rotten boards while they were extinguishing the fire. Code enforcement was notified because of the damage to the balcony and the integrity of the boards. The cause of the fire was under investigation at the time of the report.
