Caddo smashes Depew to stay unbeaten

In just one half of play, the Caddo Bruins rolled up 400 yards of offense and blasted their way to a 55-6 throttling of Depew in non-district football action last week.

Now 2-0 on the season, Coach Jeff Wigington’s squad has an off week before returning to action next week on the road at Waurika.

Caddo failed to score on its opening possession but that’s the only drive that was stymied for the Bruins during a dominant first half effort. They built a 13-0 edge through one quarter before Depew narrowed the gap with a score early in the second frame.

That’s when the flood gates opened in a big way as Wigington’s squad reeled off 42 straight points to put the contest away at halftime with the defense once again opportunistic coming up with three turnovers.

“Our defense just played great,” Coach Wigington stated. “We were still a little vanilla offensively but tried to throw it a little more this week. We hit a few deep balls, especially during that second quarter burst, and things really racked up quickly.

“We made a few adjustments defensively this week and started two freshmen at linebacker and they played extremely well. Jase Counce and Bayler Black are intelligent players that can really go make plays. Having them there allows us to move Noah Dry to defensive end and allows Boen Proctor a little breather with all the snaps he plays offensively in the backfield. I thought it paid dividends because Boen had his best game offensively for us.”

Junior quarterback Cale Wigington continued to put up impressive numbers despite only getting two quarters of action, accounting for 272 yards of total offense.

He completed nine of 13 passes for 167 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing five times for 105 yards and three more scores.

Proctor toted the ball eight times for 90 yards out of the backfield while Black added four rushes for 37 yards and a score.

Senior Jake Green was the top receiving target on the night with five catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns, one of which went 64 yards to paydirt. Proctor snagged two passes for 44 yards, including a 40-yard score. Jake McKay tossed in one grab for 13 yards and Jake Mullens had one catch for six yards.

On the defensive side, Mullens led the charge with 12 tackles and one interception. McKay had a great night in the secondary with one pick as well as 12 tackles.

Black notched 11 stops in his first start while Counce contributed seven. Dry also had nine tackles and a sack in the move to defensive end.

“Our kids are executing well, but we are going to use the bye week to work on things we can get better at on both sides of the ball,” Wigington added. “We are making it a point of emphasis to work on tackling because I didn’t feel like we tackled as well as Week 1. This off week gives us a chance to work on plenty of things because we are nowhere near where we want to be, so the opportunity is there to get better. My biggest concern is staying in shape when we haven’t had to play four quarters yet. Conditioning is something we work on regularly though.

“The schedule gets quite a bit tougher in a couple weeks and we are looking forward to it.”
