Avery Sager claims Edmond Pre-State title

Competing against some of the top competition in the state at the Edmond Pre-State Cross Country meet last Saturday, sophomore Avery Sager put on a spectacular performance.

The Durant Lady Lion standout ran to a first place individual finish facing Class 5A opposition, notching a time of 20 minutes, 32.31 seconds on the 5K course to beat the nearest 5A foe by 23 seconds for the title.

That effort led Durant to a sixth place team finish in the 11-team field.

Katelyn Mauck contributed a 23rd place time of 23:42.34, Rachel Cordell added a mark of 23:57.84 for 32nd, Laynee Emert checked in 38th at 24:33.16, Ella Sorrels was 46th in 25:06.91 and Brightyn Pilgreen was just behind in 47th with a 25:10.19 time.

Durant’s boys posted an eighth place team showing in the event led by Zach Ervin, who clocked in with an 18:52.63 for 32nd place.

Elijah Parker chipped in a 40th place time of 19:23.03, Madison Roper was 49th in 21:01.41, Chris Becerra checked in 53rd with a mark of 21:23.54, Spencer Lee ended 55th at 21:35.86 and Erick Lazaro rounded things out at 59th by posting a time of 23:03.71.

In the JV competition, Alexi Powell paced the Lady Lions and was 12th overall in 27:44.62. Jaci Austin added a mark of 30:30.99 for 23th, Jozelynn Coffey wrapped up 26th at 31:26.92 while Ari Hernandez finished 27th in 32:01.17.

The Lions notched a handful of solid JV outings as well, spurred by Landon Laster’s time of 23:14.64 for 34th place. Mitchell Palmer clocked in 44th at 24:13.73, Carson Veenstra added a mark of 25:26.72 for 58th with Hudson Phillips contributing a 59th place effort of 25:34.13.
