Durant has an excellent free resource, with something for everyone. Many of you know this community hub as the Durant Library, or, more formally, the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center and Library.
If you are new in Bryan County, come explore the library at 1515 Main Street. So many opportunities are there for you and your family.
Anyone in Bryan County with a valid ID and proof of address can get a free library card. Your card gives you access to a great collection of books, thousands of eBooks, audio books, magazines, and specialized databases, such as the newest one, Financial Fit, to learn about personal finance. You can also download an app (anyone at the front desk can help you) to access the entire Oklahoma Virtual Library to read or listen to anywhere.
The library runs very successful programs to help veterans claim benefits, to help seniors and others file tax returns, to provide a free lunch to children in our summer reading program, to offer after- school supervised play, to offer tutoring services for non-English speakers, and to provide a host of other services.
We welcome you to join the Friends of the Library! October 20-26 is the National Friends of Libraries Week, so what better time to join?
Individual memberships are $5 per year. Business Friends can join for only $100 and are encouraged to extend their sponsorships as they see what an excellent return they get on their community investment.
Beyond fees, Friends support the library by volunteering for fun projects and community events. Becoming a Friend does not commit you to participate. We will, however, keep you informed of good opportunities, and you will end up wanting to get more involved. Our Friends group assists with the library’s annual Book Sale, Summer Reading Program in June and July, Summer feeding program for children under 18, and the Holiday Craft Show. This year, the craft show will be held December 5-7, 2024. There you can find a Christmas gift for everyone in your family, including yourself !
The library is expertly managed by Robbee Tonubbee and her talented staff, who are setting up a MakerSpace Lab where you can use a 3-D printer, a resin printer, a laser cutter, sewing machines, an embroidery machine and more!
You can get more information and Friends enrollment forms from anyone who works at the library, online at www.donaldwreynolds. okpls.org, on Facebook, at 580-924-3486, or by emailing the Friends’ coordinator, Jennifer Simpkins, at friendsoflibrary09@gmail.com.
