Three early turnovers slowed Caddo a bit in last week’s non-district finale at Snyder, but once the Bruin offense started clicking they kicked it into high gear.
Coach Jeff Wigington’s squad broke things open with touchdowns on six of seven possessions to mercy rule the host Cyclones, 47-0, and get back on the winning track after a tough loss to Seiling.
The Bruins open district action this week at Quinton.
“We played about as bad as you can play against Seiling and we were disappointed in that performance,” Wigington said. “We moved some kids around and bounced back but still didn’t play as well as we would like. We have the turnover bug right now. We’ve got to take care of the ball better. You can’t afford mistakes like that in a challenging district slate of games.
“We wound up clicking really well after we got the turnovers out of our system. The defense really stepped it up with a great game plan. I believe Snyder only crossed midfield once all night.”
Caddo got the offense rolling to the tune of 523 total yards as 273 came through the air and 250 on the ground.
Junior quarterback Cale Wigington was nearly perfect throwing the football, hitting on 17 of 19 passes for 273 yards. Four of those aerials went for touchdowns.
Wigington was also the top rusher with 12 totes for 178 yards and two scores, the first of which was a 65-yard burst that gave Caddo its first points of the night. Boen Proctor contributed six attempts for 57 yards.
Five receivers contributed in the Bruin win led by Jake McKay’s five grabs for 88 yards and two touchdowns while Proctor also snagged five passes for 71 yards and one score. Jake Green chipped in four receptions for 33 yards with Noah Dry adding two for 55 yards and Jake Mullens a 26-yard touchdown catch.
McKay had another huge performance in spurring the Caddo defense with 15 tackles with Mullens posted 11 tackles as well with an interception. Proctor and Bayler Black each notched eight stops.
The focus now shifts to 3-2 Quinton, which has recorded back-to-back shutouts in wins against Maud (46-0) and Arkoma (58-0). The Savages opened the year with a 54-42 triumph at Oaks before suffering two straight losses to Webbers Falls and Drumright.
“Quinton has won its last two games with shutouts so that gets your attention,” Coach Wigington added. “We are definitely not looking ahead. All of our focus is on Quinton. They have a good quarterback that can do things with his feet. They are also sound on defense, so we have to put a good game plan together and execute.
“Our objective is to take one game at a time and try to play well every week. We just need to stay consistent up front and continue to improve every day.”
Bruin Jake Green lunges for a pass in the game with Seiling.
