Caddo slashes Canadian, eyes district title shot

Caddo ran 20 offensive plays, nine of which went for more than 20 yards, and the Bruins blasted their way to a 57-0 shellacking of Canadian in district football action last week.

The victory which improved the Bruins to 8-1 on the season, secured an opening round playoff home game and set up a showdown for the district championship at second- ranked Dewar on Friday.

Explosive plays were the story from the start as Caddo erupted for 43 first quarter points and added 14 more in the second as they scored on every offensive possession as well as another touchdown defensively.

Junior Cale Wigington completed 12 of 16 passes for a careerhigh 315 yards and six touchdowns through the air. He also added three rushes for 38 yards. Running back Boen Proctor ran only once but made it count as he bolted 78 yards for a touchdown and also caught one pass for 39 yards.

“I was really pleased the way the kids went out and executed instead of looking ahead to Dewar,” said head coach Jeff Wigington. “We scored quickly, and the defense threw a shutout. We threw it a lot to work on some things and only had one called running play. Jake McKay had an incredible game receiving and also returned an interception for a touchdown. Cale was very efficient throwing the ball.

“Our defense just stuffed them all night. It was a great game, and I was proud of the kids. I told the younger kids that this one was about our seniors. We challenged the kids to go out and play well to get some of those seniors, who don’t normally get a lot of time, a chance to play. The main thing though is that we were able to get out of the game healthy and get ready for Dewar.”

McKay’s receiving numbers included five catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Mullens tossed in two grabs for 68 yards, Noah Dry added two for 42 yards and Jake Green caught two for 20. Mullens and Green both grabbed a touchdown pass.

“All of this has led to Week 10 and I am looking forward to it,” Coach Wigington commented. “Dewar is a storied program so it’s going to be fun and be a challenge. I think it will be a good game, exciting and for a district championship. Can’t ask for much more than that.”
