Southeastern splits OT thrillers with Rangers

A pair of conference overtime thrillers went different directions in the extra periods with Southeastern splitting Monday night outings with Northwestern inside Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

Coach Darin Grover’s women finished on the positive end of things for a 77-68 win in the opener to improve to 6-4 and 3-1 in league play but the Savage Storm men saw a late lead slip away while falling 84-81 in extra time of another home barnburner.

They’ll both close out first semester action later this week at home against Southern Nazarene.

Women

Out of sync and facing a fourpoint deficit midway through the final quarter, the Southeastern women’s basketball team was in desperate need of an offensive spark and Kenzli Warden delivered just that to help rescue the Savage Storm.

The sophomore canned backto back three pointers and Stevie Stinchcomb added another to force overtime before a second Stinchcomb trey put the hosts ahead to stay.

Scoring stalwart Caitlin Kobiske tallied six straight points as Southeastern pulled away in the extra frame.

For most of the game, Kobiske had difficulty getting going against the Northwestern interior attack with the Lady Rangers posting a dominant 36-18 scoring advantage in the paint. Kobiske made the most of the opportunities she did get, connecting on seven of 10 field goal attempts on the way to 18 points.

It was Warden, however, that claimed offensive honors thanks to a blistering the net for six three pointers while tallying a seasonhigh 24 points and eight rebounds.

Stinchcomb also added 15 points as the Savage Storm overcame 18 turnovers that resulted in 22 Northwestern points.
