Calera girls win Tish tourney; Silo boys 3rd

TISHOMINGO – Calera girls rode a big fourth quarter explosion to an impressive 45-32 win over Lindsay to claim the Boyd Houser Classic tournament championship on Saturday night.

Silo boys utilized a dramatic second half comeback to edge Bryan County foe Colbert, 56-55 in overtime, for the boys’ third place trophy.

The Silo girls claimed fourth, falling to Vanoss by a 42-32 count in the third place contest. Calera boys also came up short in their bid for the consolation title, dropping a 48-39 loss to host Tishomingo.

Coach Vernon Johnson’s Lady Bulldogs trailed 19-17 at the half in the finale after accounting for just four first quarter points, but Taibree Melton canned a pair of three pointers with Emma Daniel adding a third to narrow the gap.

Seven points from sophomore Taylynn Conder helped Calera to a 27-24 advantage heading to the fourth when

Southeastern built as much as a nine-point lead in the second half and looked comfortably in control with a 71-63 edge with 2:30 remaining before misfortune set in for the young Savage Storm.

Northwestern sank backto- back three pointers as the Savage Storm had a pair of close range misses during a 7-0 Ranger flurry.

A D.J. Dill free throw with 52 seconds left made it 72-70 with 52 seconds remaining before conference scoring leader Cam McDowell’s tip-in with 30 seconds to go.

The Savage Storm had one final chance but were only able to get a desperation three point try by Landon Condiff in the waning second against the Northwestern pressure defense.

Northwestern quickly grabbed a four-point edge in the extra frame and Southeastern only managed to trim the margin to one the rest of the way.

The two squads were nearly dead even statistically, shooting 42 percent from the field, with the main difference coming on 48 points in the paint from the Rangers led by Mc-Dowell’s game-high 38.

Dill and Condiff each tallied 20 points for the Savage Storm as they both connected on three treys in the game.

Robert Briley had a strong effort with a double-double, notching 14 points along with a career-best 15 rebounds. Daniel Halldorsson chipped in six points, nine rebounds and nine assists as the Savage Storm slipped to 3-7 on the season.

Melton ended with 15 points for a balanced attack as Brown and Conder scored nine apiece. McLaughlin checked in with seven and Emma Daniel added five.

A slow start was also the story against Silo in the tournament semifinals as Calera was behind 14-12 after one quarter. They kicked into gear after that while outscoring the Lady Rebels by a 32-11 margin the rest of the way for the 44-25 triumph.

Conder had a monster game in the paint with a double-double, posting a game-high 18 points. Melton notched nine with Daniel and Brown tallying eight points apiece.

Silo’s Rebels opened the tournament with a 52-39 victory over Calera, erasing a first quarter deficit while lighting it up with four second period treys to take a 2621 halftime advantage. They tallied another 17 in the third while limiting the Bulldogs to only eight points.

Hayden Roberts sparked a balanced attack with 11 points with Sam Mendenall and Blane Beauchamp also eclipsing double digits with 10 apiece. Cash Danker scored eight.

They found the going a bit rougher in the semifinals against Class 2A’s fifthranked Vanoss but held their own in a close 49-41 setback. Doc Nuffer contributed nine points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Rebels.

Facing ninth-rated Colbert in the third-place game, the Rebels avenged a seasonopening defeat with a strong second half defensive effort while erasing an 11-point Leopard lead. Colbert built that margin on the strength of five treys, two each of which came from Adrian Clement and Alex Stogner.

Silo closed to within 37-33 at the end of three quarters and then got eight points from Roberts in the final frame to help draw even at 47. Nuffer and Barett Snapp each tallied a pair of clutch free throws in the final two minutes to offset the tremendous performance in the paint from Colbert’s Chasien Simes, who finished with a game-high 22 points.

Roberts paced Silo with 17 as Danker chipped in 10. Snapp, Mendenall, Nuffer and Warner Bradley all scored six.

Stogner and Clement posted double figures for Colbert with 12 and 10 points respectively. Kyle Peebles added eight.

The Lady Rebels of Silo began the event by tripping Colbert, 49-30, as they cruised to a 33-4 halftime advantage and never looked back.

Olivia Clark spurred the individual scoring with 15 points along with eight each from Kynleigh Pierce and Connie Tubby.

Colbert got nine points from both Alivia Love and Aericca Olsen along with eight by Alexis Stogner.

After 14 in the first period against Calera, Silo ran into offensive difficulty the rest of that contest as Pierce was the only Lady Rebel to reach double digits with 13 points.

Things didn’t get much better against a large Vanoss club in the girls’ third place game as the Lady Rebels struggled to get much going inside while hitting just three treys. Pierce posted 12 points as Clark and Kamrey Hendricks had six apiece.

Coach Trent Storts’ Calera Bulldogs bounced back from their opening loss to stop Caney, 47-35, in consolation bracket play as Logan Bumgarner caught fire with 24 points, including a trio of three pointers.

Calera was behind 9-7 through one period before Bumgarner pumped in 14 points in the second frame fueling a run that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Zaiden Craige finished with eight points, Eason Humphers chipped in seven and Gavin Chaffin also scored six.

The Bulldogs held a 23-21 lead on Tishomingo at halftime in Saturday’s consolation title game but saw the Indians outscore them 27-16 after the break.

Bumgarner notched a team-high 15 points while Craige and Chaffin both added nine.
