Sophomore Iyana Wilson provided a monster offensive performance to lift the Lady Lions to a big district road victory at Tulsa Edison as Durant split basketball contests leading into the Christmas break.
Wilson pumped in 26 points to lead the charge in a 58-38 triumph as they rebounded from a 44-40 nondistrict loss to rival Ada earlier in the week.
Durant’s boys came up short in both road contests as a late comeback fell short at Ada in a 47-43 defeat before watching a first quarter lead slip away as they fell at Tulsa Edison, 60-42.
Both teams will have an early start after the new year, hosting Ardmore for another non-district battle on Friday, January 3.
Girls
In the Ada contest, the Lady Lions fought back from a 14-11 deficit through one quarter. They outscored the Lady Cougars over the middle two frames, to carry a 34-30 advantage to the fourth stanza.
That’s where things turned thanks to an Ada size edge, outpointing the visitors 14-6 in the closing eight minutes.
Wilson spurred the scoring for Durant with 14 points along with three steals while Ella Sorrels tallied 13 points and nine rebounds as she also produced three steals.
Abrianna Freeman pumped in five, Rachel Cordell and Emma Green had three apiece on treys as Sheraya Struble pitched in two points.
The Lady Lions got off to a much better start at Edison, building a 15-9 cushion in the opening frame as Wilson set the tone with a teamleading six points.
They pushed the edge to 28-20 at intermission, but it was an ultradecisive 22-3 scoring outburst in the third quarter that put it out of reach. Wilson poured in 12 of her season-high total in that frame alone as Sorrels was not far behind with eight points of her own on the way to reaching double figures with 15.
Struble ended with seven points, Freeman had four, Anslee Morse and Cordell each posted two with Green adding one.
Boys
The Lions got a double-double from Callaway Nabors with 12 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn’t quite enough for Durant to overcome the rough offensive second stanza.
Coach Aaron George’s club was up 10-4 at the end of one frame but only managed four points in the second to trail 17-14 at intermission. Ada continued the momentum to claim a 34-26 edge heading into the fourth.
Durant made a move in the final quarter, outscoring the Cougars 1713 but was unable to make up all the difference.
Tashaun Williams contributed 11 points, Kolton Mason had eight, Leon Stone scored four as did Ryder Jones, who chipped in seven rebounds. Joseph Flores and Carson Robinson tossed in two points apiece.
Another good start against Edison gave Durant a 12-9 advantage through one stanza, but much the same story as the Ada game, they were outscored 21-13 in the second frame with the Eagles taking control.
Down 40-32 heading to the final period, the Lions were still within striking distance but couldn’t keep up with the hosts in the last eight minutes.
Jones canned four three pointers on the way to a team-high 16 points. Williams and Mason each tallied eight, Flores had five, Jace Baley scored three and Robinson ended with two.
Durant Lady Lion Zoe Lee looks to shoot the ball.
