Silo runner garners scholarship to East Central

Despite a hip injury that will sideline her for the spring track season, Silo senior Mallory Womeldorff parlayed her high school success into recently inking a scholarship with East Central University.

Womeldorff is the school record holder in the 400 meters while sitting second in school history in two other events.

“I am beyond excited because I have been wanting to run in college since I can remember,” she stated. “For that dream to be actually coming true is awesome. I’ve been running since sixth grade and since I first stepped on the track knew that’s what I wanted to do.

“The team and environment at East Central really felt like family to me and I am super excited to be a Tiger. Another one of the reasons I picked ECU is that it is local and it gives me a chance to stay close to family.”

The Silo standout reached the state track meet in the 200 meters as a freshman after finishing second in the regional meet. She was also a state alternate last year on the Lady Rebels 4x800 meters state qualifying unit, finishing sixth in the 400 in regionals as well.

Womeldorff’s school record time of 1:06.34 in the 400 was set her junior year. She also was part of the Lady Rebels’ school record mark of 1:59.07 in the 800-meter relay set in 2023.

Her 13.96 time in the 100 meters and 28.41 in the 200 meters are second best in Silo track history.

“Mallory has been a leader throughout the four years she has been here,” head coach Maggie Rose said. “She is just a wellrounded athlete and we are going to miss her. She holds the 400-meter record at Silo and is one of 13 students that have broken school records since I have been here.

“Unfortunately, she is going to have to have hip surgery and not be able to run this spring for us, but I really think she will do very well at ECU and bring a great dynamic to their team there. She should be a great 400-meter runner and 4x400 relay runner there.”
