Silo girls runner-up, boys take 3rd at Morrison

Fighting through last week’s winter weather and postponements, the Silo high school basketball teams each claimed a pair of victories in the Annual Mike Kerr Classic at Morrison.

The 19th ranked Lady Rebels picked up tournament runner-up honors on Monday night, falling to Class 2A’s 13th rated Pawhuska, 4739, in the title tilt. Silo reached the finals by easily dispatching Luther by a 55-18 count and edging host Morrison, 31-28.

Silo’s boys, meanwhile, rode a late surge to knock off previously unbeaten Wesleyan Christian, 59-49, in the opener but came up short 56-47 in an upset bid against Class B eighthranked Frontier. The Rebels bounced back however to surprise Oklahoma Christian Academy 61-52 for the tournament third-place trophy.

Girls

Jumping all over Luther from the start, Silo sprinted to a 17-2 lead and never looked back while cruising by the Lady Lions.

Kyleigh Pierce pitched in 13 points to lead a trio of Lady Rebel double figure scorers. Kamrey Hendricks also had 12 with Brooklyn Redwine checking in with 10.

Points were at a premium in the Morrison contest although Silo looked like it might run away with it while building a 20-6 second quarter lead behind three treys from Cache Atwood.

Morrison came storming back, however, as the Lady Rebels hit just enough free throws down the stretch to hold on. Atwood tallied 13 points to lead all scorers with Olivia Clark added eight and Raini Metheny six.

Silo got off to a good start against a solid Pawhuska club, leading 11-8 through one period, but the Lady Huskies took the lead in the second stanza and gradually added to the margin over the final three quarters.

Nonetheless, the Lady Rebels hung tough in spite of 23 turnovers, narrowing the gap to just four after a Pierce bucket in the final frame.

Pierce notched 14 points with Clark also reaching double digits at 10. Hendricks wrapped up with nine points.

Boys

A wild finish against Wesleyan Christian saw Silo erase an 11-point fourth quarter deficit that included incredibly scoring the final 17 points of the game during the last three minutes.

Hayden Roberts’ spinning bucket in the lane put the Rebels ahead and Blane Beauchamp’s three pointer with just over 90 seconds remaining proved to be the dagger.

Roberts tallied 14 points in sparking a balanced offensive charge. Cash Danker and Sam Mendenall contributed 10 apiece as Beauchamp scored eight and Kason Proctor added seven.

Silo put together one of its best halves of the season to lead perennial state power Frontier 31-29 at intermission but was unable to withstand the Mustangs’ high-pressure attack over the game’s closing 10 minutes.

Barett Snapp and Roberts scored 10 points each while Doc Nuffer finished with nine inside.

The Rebels broke open a tie game in the second half largely on the strength of the one-two combination of Snapp and Nuffer, who combined for 16 big points out of intermission.

Coach Adam Dworsky’s squad pushed the advantage to 49-40 at the end three periods and OCA never got closer than five after that thanks to solid free throw shooting.

Snapp tallied a careerhigh 14 points with Nuffer also posting a career-best 14 points along with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Mendenall canned a pivotal fourth quarter three pointer on the way to 10 points. Roberts had six as Danker, Beauchamp and Proctor each tossed in five points.
