Snow blankets the region

Approximately 6-8 inches of snow fell last week beginning in the morning on Jan. 9 and continued throughout the evening and the next morning.

There were many accidents but none with major injuries.

Durant firefighters responded at 10:45 a.m. Jan. 9 after a pickup slid off a curve on Robinson Street on the east side of Durant and crashed into a house.

When firefighters arrived, there was a Chevrolet pickup occupied by two women that had crashed through a wall of the home. According to a DFD report, both said they were not injured. A firefighter climbed over the hood of the pickup to see if anyone was home and there was not.

The fire department was able to talk to the homeowner through a camera doorbell on the front of the house and they remained on scene until the homeowner arrived. She told firefighters someone was coming to help board up the home.

Bryan County EMS arrived and both women declined medical treatment.

In other accidents, A crash involving a semi last Friday morning in the southbound lanes of Highway 69/75 near Hat Powell Road south of Caddo caused traffi c to be backed up for miles.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a pickup also departed the highway and struck the OHP Capt. Jeff Sewell memorial highway sign.

OHP Troop E troopers worked with the Oklahoma National Guard SMRT teams in the Bryan County area during the storm. Also, the Stranded Motorist Recovery teams were in operation from McAlester and Durant and consisted of guardsmen, utilizing Humvees, wreck- ers, and Light Medium Tactical Vehicles.

OHP said that between 6 a.m. and midnight Jan. 9, there were the following incidents statewide: - Non-injury collisions: 458 - Injury collisions: 85 - Fatality collisions: Zero - Motorist assists: 254 - Abandoned vehicles: 43 Area schools, including Durant and Southeastern, closed last Thursday and Friday.
