EMS sales tax proposition fails

Voters shot down a one-cent sales tax proposition for Bryan County EMS in a special election Tuesday.

According to unofficial election results released by the Bryan County Election Board, the proposition was defeated 77.88 percent with 1,915 voters opposed.

There were 544 votes for it, 22.12 percent. A total of 2,459 residents voted in the election.

Bryan County EMS Director Brian Norton said the tax would have allowed EMS to build substations, obtain more ambulances, hire more medics and improve response times to emergencies.

In August 2022, voters approved $5,560,000 bond to build a new facility that will give EMS the space they need plus provide for future growth.

That building is near completion and EMS will be moving into it soon.

The election results will not be official until finalized at 5 p.m. Friday.
