Caddo boys fall to Okay in state semifinals

Riding a big size edge, the Caddo Bruins opened the Class A state tournament win over Cyril, but the advantage turned the other way as they saw the season end in the semifinals with a 67-39 loss to Okay.

The second-ranked Bruins wrapped up the season with a 24-5 record.

Caddo won a close 50-47 battle with Cyril to begin the event as they cashed in a whopping 31-14 edge on the boards.

Braden Tyson was the catalyst in that charge as he posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds while working around the paint. He connected on eight of 16 from the field.

Cyril was clinging to a 13-12 edge after one period before the Bruins answered with a second quarter flurry to go ahead 24-22 at the break. Caddo’s best scoring stanza proved to be the third with a 17-13 edge and built a six-point bulge into the fourth, which proved to be the largest lead of the game.

In addition to Tyson’s teamhigh production, the Bruins got 11 points from freshman Beck Willingham. Rance Richardson tallied eight, Kale Brister had six, Noah Bacon scored five with Dallas Williams and Keshawn Smith chipping in two points apiece.

Caddo could never fully slow a red-hot Okay offense in the semi final defeat as the Mustangs scorched the nets for 69 percent shooting in the first half, including hitting five three pointers. And although the Bruins weren’t bad at 41 percent, they still trailed 18-12 after one period and 31-21 at intermission.

Perimeter shooting was decisive after the break as Okay canned six treys to extend the advantage while Caddo hit only 16 percent beyond the arc on two for 12 shooting. It was a 46-33 cushion at the end of three quarters.

Willingham totaled 13 points and Tyson tossed in 10 to pace the Bruin scoring effort. Williams and Bacon added five apiece.
