Durant soccer splits Rogers district outings

Durant’s Lady Lion soccer team notched its first district win of the season while the boys came up just a bit short in 5A-4 action against Tulsa Rogers last Friday night at Paul Laird Field.

The Lady Lions tied their season- high scoring mark in a 3-1 victory to improve to 4-2 on the season while Coach John Wilmoth’s Lions fell to the visiting Ropers in dropping to 1-7.

Both teams will be back home Friday when they host Tulsa Hale starting at 5 p.m.

Girls

Sophomore Kira Hoffman put on an early offensive barrage and finished with six shots on goal for the Lady Lions while finding the back of the net on two of those.

J.J. Patten contributed a goal and assist in chipping in four shots on goal as well. Durant also got solid performances from Lily Ruiz, Kirsten Collins, Avery Blackburn and Aubree Wise with one shot on goal apiece.

Alex Martinez posted seven saves and held the Lady Ropers scoreless until a late goal with only five minutes remaining in the contest.

Boys

Durant took an early lead in the match on a Joseph Flores goal but that proved to be all the scoring for the Lions on the night.

Rogers answered by slipping through a shot for a tying goal just before halftime.

It remained that way until late in the second half thanks to solid play by the Lion defensive back line and keeper Leland Hardwick before the Ropers knocked in the eventual game winner.

“We played really hard and that gave us a chance to win,” Wilmoth stated. “I can’t ask for anything more than that.”
