SE softball inches closer to GAC playoffs

A three-game sweep of visiting Arkansas- Monticello solidified the Southeastern Savage Storm positioning in quest of reaching the Great American Conference tournament with seven games remaining.

With the wins, Coach McKenzie Sher’s squad improved to 24-21 overall and 15-11 in league play.

All three of the weekend contests were tight low-scoring affairs in which Southeastern pitching yielded just one run in each game.

The Savage Storm took the opener 3-1 as Emily Simmons twirled a five-hitter in the pitching circle, striking out 11 and walking only one batter over seven strong innings.

Southeastern broke a 1-1 deadlock with two fifth inning runs on a single by Sage Harlow and a double off the bat of Iliana Olivares.

A 4-1 triumph in the series second game utilized a trio of Southeastern hurlers with Trinity Oden, Alyson Malone and Sheyenne Cheek combining to scatter seven hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Oden helped her own cause with a tworun double in the second that proved to be all the runs the Savage Storm would need.

The finale was a 2-1 victory as Bailey Kite fired four innings while Simmons chipped in three frames of scoreless nohit relief and picked up the victory as they tied the score on an Olivares solo homer in the sixth inning before winning it with Abrianna Kennedy’s walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh.
