Host of Lions qualify for 5A State Track Meet

Durant finished with eight individual state qualifiers as well as four relay teams during a strong showing at the Class 5A regional track meet last week at Tulsa Union.

Six of the individual qualifiers came in the girls’ division as the Lady Lions claimed seventh in the team standings.

Leading the charge was the 100-meter hurdle duo of Iyana Wilson and Skyla Conditt, who placed second and third respectively. Wilson clocked in at 16.7 with Conditt at 17.22. Wilson also reached state in the 300 hurdles after posting a third-place time of 49.13.

Avery Sager was a multi-event qualifier, taking regional runner-up honors in the 1600 meters at 5:31.17 as well as fourth place in the 800 meters in 2:26.78.

Bailey Cross punched her state ticket in the pole vault with a third place leap of 9 feet even. Brightyn Pilgreen ended sixth in the 3,200 meters at 15:44.70, Conditt took sixth in the long jump with a personal best 15 feet, 7 ½ inches, Sheraya Struble ended fifth in the discus at 96 feet, 7 inches while Emma Gardner checked in sixth in the shot put with a heave of 31 feet, 6 ½ inches.

The Lady Lion 3,200 relay unit of Judi Free, Sager, Brooklyn Hill and Laynee Emert qualified for state as they placed fourth in 10:37.47 and the 1,600 foursome of Olivia Crossland, Samiah Clegg, Andi Kovalcinova and Sager also hit a qualifying slot, finishing fifth at 4:22.23.

Durant was fifth as well in the sprint relay as the grouping of Clegg, Xakayla Cox, Samyah Holmes and Kaitlen Rush clocked in at 52.72 seconds. The same squad was sixth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:51.48.

The Lions were also seventh in the team standings as Rylan Avery was the regional champ in the 300 hurdles at 41.18 seconds with teammate Ivan Barrientos claiming sixth in 43.2.

K.J. Lowery qualified as well in the 800 meters, posting a personal best time of 1:58.32 and Damien Almos punched his ticket also in the 110 high hurdles, taking third with a personal best 15.275.

Zach Ervin recorded a pair of personal best times in the distance events, claiming fourth in the 1,600 meters at 4:43.44 as well as fifth in the 3,200 meters in 10:27.48. Hunter Romero added a sixth-place toss of 124 feet, 7 inches in the discus.

Durant’s 1,600 relay grouping of Lowery, Madison Roper, Avery and Spencer Lee secured their state meet slot with a personal best 3:26.85 as they finished as regional runner-up. The 3,200 unit of Lowery, Roper, Avery and Carter Kemp checked in fourth with a time of 8:24.16 to also qualify.

Rounding out the placers was the 800 relay squad of Juston Andrus, Eric Williams, Boston Browder and Lee as they were sixth in crossing at 1:33.06.
