The Bryan County Turning Point Coalition gave away 423 backpacks to local students during its annual Back to School Bash Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center & Library.
Taylor Metz, chair of Bryan County Turning Point Coalition, said the event is also an opportunity for local agencies to set up and provide resources to community members.
“We typically order a bunch of backpacks that are purchased through funds that are donated from everyone in the community and we just have a big showing every year,” Metz said. We typically see about three to five hundred people. They come in, get some good resources and get a backpack full of supplies and we also have hot dogs out in the back.
“This year, we ordered approximately 520 backpacks. We typically try to purchase backpacks in that range and usually, we’ll have a little bit leftover, but for the most part, they usually all get picked up. “The coalition purchases the backpacks, but the money that we utilize is donated to us by local agencies and community partners.”
In a social media post after the event, the coalition said 423 youth were provided backpacks and school supplies and 177 local families were served.
“Seeing so many bright smiles and excited students reminds us exactly why we do what we do,” the coalition said. “Every backpack packed, every pencil handed out, every resource shared — it all makes a difference. When we invest in our youth, we invest in a stronger, brighter future for our entire community. Giving back creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond a single event, and we’re honored to be part of that impact.”
The coalition thanked all of the vendors, volunteers, the planning committee and coalition officers.
“This couldn’t have happened without you,” the coalition said. “Your time, energy and heart helped create a joyful, safe, and empowering event for our families.”
They also thanked the library for hosting the event and ensuring everything operated smoothly.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, community,” the coalition said. “Let’s keep lifting each other up because when we come together, amazing things happen.”
