Choctaw and other local artists to show original works

MILLERTON – On the 35-acre grounds where in 1832, education, life skills and culture were taught to young Choctaws, a popular annual event will return from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 under the pavillion and on the lawn in front of Pushmataha Hall at Wheelock Academy Historic Site, 1377 Wheelock Road, near Millerton.

The third Annual Wheelock Academy Historic Site Arts & Crafts Fair will showcase southeast Oklahoma artisans and offers a beautiful day-trip drive for the whole family.

At least 18 artists and craftsmen are expected to display and sell original works at the arts and crafts fair. The Wheelock Museum and Gift Shop will be open to visitors. Giveaways donated by the beadmakers, dressmakers, other jewelry makers, painters, home décor designers, and flutemaker Presley Byington will take place throughout the day. There will be no food vendors, but the public is invited to bring their own food and drinks and picnic on the grounds.

Most of the artists and craftsmen are from the tri-county area in southeast Oklahoma with several coming from Durant and from outside of the Choctaw Nation reservation. The public is invited to shop, bring their own tailgate refreshments, and spend time visiting with the artists.

There is no admission fee. Ample parking is available. For information phone (580) 746-2139 or dstandridge@ choctawnation.com.
